NS Moms Force Province to Amend Legislation

Posted November 2025

As NS Moms we are delighted and proud to announce that on April 1, 2026, the PHIA clause 38(1)(d) will be proclaimed, allowing improved information-sharing between clinicians and caregivers. This amendment will mean that caregivers are now empowered to share and obtain important information with clinicians and so prevent the many unnecessary mental health disasters and loss of life that have occurred all too frequently in the province over many years. Since January 2025, NS Moms have been working closely with government leaders on several initiatives supporting Mom’s four priorities.

Most of our members work directly with families every day — either as family peer supporters assisting those caring for loved ones with serious mental illness, or as supporters of families who have lost loved ones to suicide following untreated or delayed mental health and addiction care. We experienced the unnecessary harm caused over the years by this legislation.

We know how much this change will benefit health care for the mentally ill in the province. The changes will help greatly but more changes are necessary.
